Truecaller: Why I Think Malaysians Should Consider a Caller ID / Spam Protection App
It is not a tool that can tell you with 100% certainty who is a scammer. Its value is giving you a little more context before you answer an unknown call.
When an unknown number calls today, the question is no longer just “Should I answer?”. The real questions are: Who is calling, why are they calling, and has this number been reported by other people before? JagaSemua believes Truecaller and similar apps are best treated as a first layer of filtering — not the final judge.
Scam calls are no longer a small problem
PDRM reported: 28,698 telecommunication crime cases , recorded between January and November 2025, with losses of about RM715 million. More importantly, people aged 21–30 made up the largest victim age group. The point is simple: scams are not something that only happen to older people who are unfamiliar with technology. Younger people get scammed too.
By early 2026, PDRM had also recorded 1,459 fake investment scam cases , in January and February alone, with losses already reaching RM188 million. In January 2026, PDRM also warned that criminals were using AI voice cloning, audio/video deepfakes and fake emergency calls to imitate the voices of family members, friends or bosses.
Older scam calls were often easier to spot because the scripts sounded crude or suspicious. Today, the number, identity, voice and even the entire story can feel much more convincing. An extra layer of information before you answer can help — but it still cannot guarantee that a call is safe.
The iPhone is smarter now — but Call Screening and Caller ID solve different problems
In iOS 26, Apple added Call Screening. When an unsaved number calls, the iPhone can first ask the caller for their name and reason for calling, then show you the response before you decide whether to answer.
Apple Call Screening
It is closer to answering: “Why is this unknown person calling me?” The system collects information from the caller before your phone rings normally.
Caller ID / Truecaller
It is closer to answering: “Who might this number belong to, and have other people reported it before?” It tries to provide more context using number databases and community reports.
Apple Malaysia’s iPhone guide does document Call Screening, but Apple’s Feature Availability list still shows that some features depend on supported languages and regions. So do not assume every iPhone in Malaysia will have exactly the same experience regardless of language or region settings.
Truecaller’s real value: more context before you answer
Without additional Caller ID, your incoming call screen may show nothing more than a number such as +60 1X-XXXX XXXX. You do not know whether it is a customer, courier, clinic, telemarketer, debt collector or scammer. Many people eventually fall back on one simple rule: “I do not answer unknown numbers.”
The problem is that this can also make you miss legitimate and important calls. A Caller ID app tries to reduce that uncertainty by showing a name, category, spam status or other information when data is available.
Truecaller is not a tool that can identify scammers with 100% certainty. It is an additional layer of information that helps us know a little more — and guess a little less — before deciding whether to answer.

Four reasons I think it is worth considering
Not because Truecaller “knows who every scammer is”. Its real value is reducing the amount of guessing before you answer or call back an unknown number.
Most importantly: Truecaller can also get it wrong
Truecaller itself explains that its spam list relies heavily on community reports. If a number is repeatedly marked as nuisance, marketing or spam, it may be added to the spam list. Truecaller also acknowledges that false positives can happen.
Legitimate businesses that cold-call or call repeatedly may also be reported as spam by many users. Do not treat an app label alone as proof that someone is committing fraud.
A scammer using a new number may not have accumulated enough reports yet. Even if there is no warning, you still need to verify the caller yourself.
Truecaller explicitly states that it cannot identify hidden numbers. The phone number itself must be visible on the screen before Truecaller has a number to identify. So this feature has a clear limitation when you receive a “Private Number” or “No Caller ID” call.
Remember these two lines
No scam warning ≠ safe.
Spam label ≠ definitely a scammer.
Caller ID should support your judgment — not replace your judgment and verification.
On iPhone, the free version and the full experience are not the same
According to Truecaller’s official guidance that remains current in 2026, an iPhone running iOS 18.2 or laterneeds the following for the full Caller ID experience:
iOS 18.2+
This is the iOS version required by Truecaller’s newer Caller ID framework.
Truecaller v14+
The Truecaller app needs to be version 14.0 or later.
Premium + required switches enabled
You need an active Premium subscription and must enable all relevant switches under Settings → Apps → Phone → Call Blocking & Identification.
Truecaller says free iOS users can still use ad-supported number lookup and identification for Verified Businesses. But the free experience should not be confused with the full Premium Caller ID experience.
As with any communications app, review the permissions, privacy settings and current terms before installing it. App features, pricing and system requirements may change after this article is updated.
Do not build just one “wall”. Use three layers of defence.
If the goal is to genuinely reduce risk, one app is not enough. A better structure is: Identify → Verify → Respond.
Identify | Get context first
Use Caller ID, iPhone Call Screening or number lookup to get context first. Ask: Who is calling? How much does this tool actually know about this number?
Verify | Check independently
Even if your screen says “Maybank”, “PDRM”, “LHDN” or “BNM”, do not trust the caller solely because of Caller ID. Hang up, find the official number on the organisation’s website or official app, and call back yourself to verify.
Respond | Act if something has happened
If money has already been transferred, or you notice a suspicious transaction, contact your bank and NSRC 997, then lodge a police report and preserve all evidence.
- “Your account is linked to a crime / money laundering.”
- “Transfer the money to a safe account now / cooperate with the investigation.”
- “Do not tell your family / bank / anyone else.”
- They ask for your OTP, PIN, password, full card number or online-banking access.
- They keep pressuring you, saying it is “urgent” and forcing you to decide immediately.
BNM has long warned about a common scam pattern in which criminals impersonate banks, BNM or law-enforcement agencies and use fear to pressure victims into giving up banking information or transferring money. In 2026, the basic rule is still the same: do not panic, do not hand over sensitive information, and verify independently through official channels.
Do not spend more time reading — act now.
In May 2026, PDRM stated that NSRC 997 operates 24 hours a day , providing a rapid-response channel for financial scam victims. If the transfer has just happened, time is critical.
Should you use Truecaller?
For many users in Malaysia, it is worth considering — as long as you have the right expectations.
If you regularly receive calls from unsaved numbers, Caller ID / Spam Protection can reduce uncertainty before you answer. At the same time, iOS 26 has also added more native call-screening tools to the iPhone.
So the better choice is not to “trust Truecaller” or “trust the iPhone”. The safer approach is to treat these technologies as early signals. Whenever a call involves money, accounts, identity, or deliberately creates fear and pressure, verify independently.
